5 Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments and What Each One Fixes

· Cosmetic Dentistry · 3 min read

Cosmetic dentistry covers a wide range, from a twenty-minute polish to a full smile reconstruction. Knowing which treatment addresses which problem saves you both money and unnecessary tooth removal.

1. Teeth whitening

Fixes: yellowing and staining from tea, coffee, tobacco and paan, and the natural darkening of dentine with age.

Professional whitening uses peroxide that penetrates the enamel and breaks down pigment molecules inside the tooth. Nothing is scraped off. Options are in-clinic in a single appointment, custom take-home trays, or both.

Limits: it does not change crowns, veneers or fillings — they stay the shade they were made. Grey and tetracycline staining respond poorly. See teeth whitening.

The least invasive option on this list — always consider it first.

2. Composite bonding

Fixes: chips, small gaps, uneven edges, and minor shape irregularities.

Tooth-coloured resin is sculpted directly onto the tooth, shaped and polished. One visit, no laboratory, usually little or no tooth removal, and easily repaired.

Limits: it stains over time and typically needs replacing after several years. Not suitable for large restorations.

Best value for a single chipped corner.

3. Veneers

Fixes: colour, shape and mild alignment all at once, across the front teeth.

A thin shell of ceramic bonded to the front of the tooth. Done well, veneers look outstanding and last well over a decade.

The thing to understand before agreeing: most conventional veneers require a small amount of enamel to be removed, and that is permanent. Once prepared, the tooth needs a veneer or crown for the rest of its life.

That is a reasonable trade for a genuinely improved result. It is not a reasonable trade for a problem whitening or aligners would have solved. If a dentist proposes eight veneers without first discussing those options, get a second opinion.

4. Orthodontics — braces and clear aligners

Fixes: crowding, gaps, rotations and bite problems.

Frequently the healthiest cosmetic option, because it removes no tooth structure at all. It moves your own teeth into the right positions rather than masking their position with ceramic.

Limits: takes 6 to 24 months rather than weeks. Does not change colour.

Many patients who ask for veneers would get a better and more conservative result from aligners plus whitening. See braces and clear aligners.

5. Laser gum contouring

Fixes: a gummy smile, or an uneven gum line that makes teeth look different lengths.

Sometimes teeth look short when they are actually a normal length — there is simply too much gum showing. A dental laser reshapes the gum line precisely, sealing vessels as it works, so there is minimal bleeding and quick healing.

Limits: where the cause is the jaw rather than the gum, contouring will not solve it, and we will say so.

Smile designing ties it together

The mistake in cosmetic dentistry is treating teeth one at a time. A smile is a composition — relative widths, where the edges sit against the lower lip, how much gum shows, whether the midline matches the face.

Smile designing photographs and measures all of that first, then works backwards to decide what each tooth needs. You see and approve the plan before any irreversible work begins. See cosmetic dentistry and smile design.

Health first

Cosmetic work goes on top of a healthy mouth, never instead of one. Decay and gum disease are treated first — veneers over inflamed gums look wrong within a year and fail early.
