5 Oral Care Tips to Prevent Plaque Buildup

How to Prevent Plaque Buildup on Your Teeth?

Admit it, dental plaque is in everyone’s mouth. In case you don’t know, it is basically a sticky film which builds up with bacteria on your teeth. When plaque stays for a long time, it makes your teeth weaker. It causes gum disease and tooth decay. You cannot remove bacteria off your mouth but you can avoid plaque buildup.

Brushing (at least 2 times a day)

Everyone knows brushing is important, but how frequently? Ideally, you should brush after each meal to avoid plaque whenever it develops. It is very important to brush in before going to bed. It is because plaque stays around on the teeth throughout night. It is recommended to choose a toothbrush with soft bristles because hard ones can be harmful to the gums. To get the most of each brushing, follow these steps –

  • Hold the toothbrush at the angle of 45 degree to the gums while brushing
  • Apply the paste in circular motion.
  • Cover all the inner and outer surfaces and top of the teeth
  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and fresh up your breath.
  • Brush for at least 2 minutes

Floss

Plaque doesn’t just build up on your teeth. It also hides in between the teeth. So, it is best to floss to reach there. Brushing is not enough to remove plaque off the teeth. Floss at least once in a day. If you don’t wrap the floss around the fingers, you can try other options like –

  • Pre-threaded flossers
  • Dental picks
  • Water flossers
  • Wooden plaque removers
  • Straight, small brushes which fit in between the teeth

You can do it before or after brushing or take your own time. You just have to do it.

Mouth wash

Antibacterial mouthwash can be a great option for a lot of people when it comes to prevent plaque. Mouthwash usually helps loosen plaque and it can be a lot easier to remove. It is recommended to use a mouthwash as per your needs. If you have dry mouth or you are vulnerable to cavities, you can take mouthwashes. To choose the best mouthwash, it is always recommended to ask the dentist.

Avoid Sugar and Starch

After you eat, sugary food can stick to your mouth and bacteria starts building up. Acidic and sugary foods cause tooth decay. Also avoid alcohol, starchy foods like bread and potato chips, carbonated soft drinks, and sticky candies. If you eat them, drink a lot of water afterwards so it can wash away each bit of food and maintain proper moisture on your mouth. Brush after having your meals to keep your teeth clean. You can also chew sugarless gum if toothbrush is not around.
